Wilmington, North Carolina, has heavy recreational traffic along the beach south to Fort Fisher, on the bank of the Cape Fear River. At Shallotte, the terrain is essentially flat and the route heads to the coast through Myrtle Beach and surrounding cities which cater to tourists. In Charleston, there are several bike paths used to navigate the city. The section ends in Okatie, South Carolina, a suburban community located west of Hilton Head Island. Carry print version, also download to Garmin 1000 and have Google maps loaded on phone and track both in real time while riding. AC print version listed motel in remote areas that we’d otherwise not have found avoiding an otherwise very long day. AC on Garmin much better at keeping us off decent shoulders of highways than Google, but went with Google when distance was a concern (trying to beat bad weather).

We rode a portion of the South Carolina section starting in Conway SC and Finishing at the Georgia border. The routing layed out by Adventure Cycling was for the most part lightly traveled rural roads in great conditon for cycling. In this section of the route you must determine the distance you want to ride and pick overnight stays accordingly becuase there is nothing between what is shown on the Adventure Cycling map. I would highly recommend this route and would ride it again if the opportunity presented itself.
