I just finished the TransAM going east and I used both the GPX and Navigation APP by far the GPX data was more helpful, Minimal affect on battery life on Garmin but Significant battery life on phone app. It was great to have voice turn by turn instructions from the Garmin no need to look at map! Had some odd U-Turns come up and quickly checking map screen on Garmin showed it as a anomaly in data (may have to do with how it was recorded if someone turned to wait for a partner, I have done this on my own route recordings before). Highly recommend GPX data and not sure why it is discouraged and considered less of a option.

I used both the APP and the GPX data on my TransAM ride this year and by far the GPX data in the Garmin Cycle Computer was my preference! It provided turn by turn voice prompts starting at a tenth of a mile out. There was some conflicts with the GPX data matching the road signs at times (I will be providing detail feedback on route issues) but overlall the GPX data was much preferred over the phone app and battery life was never a issue with the Garmin 830 using GPX data.
