Well, we just finished a ST...during the wrong season so heat was our companion and thirst was our 'friend'. Take it from me, you do not want to be in NM, AZ or CA in late May and/or June...just don't do it. Even in the right season, this tour is not for the beginner, even though it is the shortest EW route. Why? there aren't as many bicycle accommodations as on other routes and also the SW region seems to specialize in folks with a "You get on with yours and I'll get on with mine" attitude that just seems to result in not much interaction and NO offers of assistance....we only met with two and one of them was traveling out of state from Oregon! I might not notice it so much if we were traveling... through the desert....in summer...on bicycles. So...save this trip for your second or third.
Now...the maps. The map set worked out fine, though we relied heavily on the errata as some resources no longer exist. We don't use a bag or other protection for the maps on the bike so there was a tiny bit of wear in one fold area but not enough to interfere with navigation. If I were to do this trip again, I would definitely take this set...but be open to plotting your own course especially through Texas since some parts of the Texas section just don't make sense given current road conditions.

Love the quality of the paper. We were constantly folding and unfolding the maps and they withstood our abuse. At one point, we wondered why ACA routed us so far north of Baton Rouge, so we took the direct route to the city. Ahhhh, 3 flat tires later and a very scary high traffic, no shoulder bridge crossing and we were able to see the error of our ways. ACA takes a lot of time to scope out the very best and safest roads for the cyclists. We are believers in these maps!

The designated route is much longer and more hilly than necessary, but more scenic. If you ignore these maps and find the shortest routes you will travel faster but there will be more traffic.
The info about towns was very helpful, especially combined with details from a smart phone (which saved us a lot of time and money.) We relied on these maps and were seldom disappointed, although be prepared, since hotels, restaurants, and campgrounds are constantly coming and going. The map's bike shop info came in handy, also.

The maps are good, but expensive for fold up paper maps. The information is accurate and clear. I would not pay that much again for this product. I expected a book style map for the $100.00 I spent.

I will use mostly the ACA maps on my coast to coast trip next spring. The quality of the maps is very good and the amount of information available should make the trip easier. I should have more to say next year after the trip.

I am looking for the map set in a ready to go gps format so I can install in my ipad or gps device. As it is now I have to build my own from the maps you sent me. I would suggest an interactive web site to keep the maps corrections and changes live. Design a downloadable site that updates gps devices on an instant live bases.

I ordered the Southern Tier;Grand Canyon;and Western Express maps well ahead of my planned ride (2 years away), because I was anxious to start planning. Having said that, I love the maps, and have been reading over them ever since I received them. I need to be careful that I don't wear them out beforehand. It is 20 years ago since I used your Northern Tier maps to ride across the USA, and I have always raved about them. I truly appreciate all the effort that you put into producing your maps. I actually have only just recently posted a comment about them on the forum under the "ACA Maps" thread. I am already looking forward to my ride in 2013. Kind regards Dennis Schluter

I thought the maps were well done - however it would be nice to have north, south, east and west on them as they tend to twist around and I had to carry a AAA map for each state to get oriented.

We have not yet used the Southern Tier maps on the road, but they have already proven to be worth their weight in gold. In doing our planning, two months out from departure day in San Diego, we have been able to plan the distances we'll ride each day (assuming all goes as planned!), where we'll sleep each night, and when we need to be aware of limited services, steep inclines or excess traffic. Just knowing that we will have these maps with us, with their tried-and-true routes and directions, as well as the service directories (especially useful for these two non-Iphone ladies), this gives us the confidence that we truly can pull off this 42 day adventure on our own. Thank you, Adventure Cycling!

I think the maps are terrific! I've been a navigator for over 50 years and these are as well laid out, comprehensive, useful, informative and pretty as I've seen. I do, however, have one small quibble: why not have a between miles dot at each matchline? I'm using MapMyRide to plot the route in preparation for transferring them as courses to a Garmin Edge 705. It would make locating the turning points easier.
Nine of us are planning to leave from San Diego on 24 March and your maps (and my navigation) will be given the real test then.

although we won't be using the maps till feb.,my first reaction was wishing they were larger so that those of us with bi-focals could read them without having to get out our glasses. otherwise they look like they have a lot of needed detail. also, the maps thru el paso should emphasize using the anthony gap alternative since mesa st. is very busy. another alternative would be doniphan dr.

I wouldn't do it this way again...Too fast...Too much work...And being Solo was lonely! Your link to stories of people that had done trip was very helpful to me and helped to give me idea of what I might encounter. Hense the excellent rating...This was of great value to read the story of others and that helped to make my trip a success...May the wind be at your back...Thank you, Leon
