Beginning in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the route crosses the St. Croix River into Wisconsin at Osceola. It is mostly flat as it makes a gradual transition from dairy farms to northern lakes as well as pine and birch forests. The county roads through the northern Wisconsin lakes are narrow, hilly and rough in some places, but traffic is very light, the air is fresh and clear and the scenery is bucolic. Rolling hills continue into Michigan with few services and little traffic.

We only did an out and back from Stillwater, MN to Hayward, WI in Six Days but I and a friend are 70 years old and retired so we only need to do 50 miles per day. Your route was good but with the checkerboard pattern of Wisconsin roads, we were off map about half the time. We did ride the Stower Seven Lakes Trail on our road bikes with panniers. The surface was hard but it was gravel and a fee is requested. The Cattail Trail is not rideable with road bikes. It is mainly an ATV trail. No ATV's are allowed on the Stower Seven Lakes Trail. Since a logical overnight is Hayward, we took a different route which is 9 miles shorter and not as many hills. We stayed on M West of Long Lake, to E, to Rainbow road, to Anderson Road and 27 into Hayward. Wisconsin published great bike maps and I am sure you have copies. They cover the complete state with 4 large maps. Wisconsin is great biking since the farm roads are paved with very little traffic. This trail is popular for riders out of Minneapolis.
