This route around northern Lake Michigan features a ferry ride option across the lake, miles of beautiful shoreline, and the great forests of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. After leaving the Upper Peninsula, the route travels southward through the forests and farms of lower Michigan. It traverses northeast Indiana, home to the Amish, before ending in Monroeville, a town along the Northern Tier Bicycle Route. If used in conjunction with the Northern Tier, the North Lakes Route will be 260 miles longer to cross the country. North Lakes offers an interesting alternative for Northern Tier riders wanting to experience the beauty of the Great Lakes.

We traveled this map set summer 2018. This was one of our absolute favorite parts of our cross country trip. Northern Wisconsin was magic, rolling along these excellent roads with low traffic and tons of vegetation. Excellent routing. We felt we got a grand tour of Michigan, as we did the route that went through the upper peninsula and then down along the Lake Michigan coast. Only made 2 detours, one was a mistake (just across the Wisconsin state line, we missed the turn and ended up in Iron City! But enjoyed the rail trail down to Caspian and the route) and one we chose (from Mackinaw, MI down to Petosky State Park on a gravel rail trail (short on time). Not the best gravel trail, but decent and good way to shave off some miles in the heat of summer.) We loved this route, and recommend the North Lakes route to anyone who can add the miles and days to their Northern Tier experience. We think it should be the permanent route of Northern Tier, with the shorter route being a detour! We met wonderful people everywhere, had some of our best camping adventures, and enjoyed the lakes, large and small. Would not have wanted to miss it.

Thanks for the quick response

I am so glad this route exists. We are planning a two week tour and didn't want to get too far from home. I love the northwoods feel of northern Wisconsin so this gave us a nice alternate to ride part of the northern tier from Fargo to Osceola one week and than part of the northern lakes route from Osceola to Escanaba the next week. I haven't ridden the route yet so I will write more after the journey.

using the northen tier maps all the way
